Richard III Audio Pre-Show Notes

Welcome to the Gazebo Players' summer Shakespeare in the Park production Richard the Third, directed by Benjamin Medeiros.
As you enter the park, you might recognize the pulsing beat or angry lyrics of punk rock music.
Often politicized and full of vital energy beneath a sarcastic, hostile facade, punk spread as both an ideology and an aesthetic approach, becoming a symbol of rebellion and alienation. The decade long British punk era perfectly captures the 10 years of British history when Richard, Duke of Gloucester, sets out to capture and retain the crown of England.
The History
Because both Shakespeare and the British monarchy are fond of reusing names, here is some historical context and a family tree to help identify the characters.
Richard the Third’s campaign and reign took place during what we commonly refer to as The War of the Roses. The conflict was fought between supporters of the House of Lancaster, symbolized by a red rose, and the House of York, symbolized by a white rose. The rivals were cousins vying for the throne last held by King Henry the sixth, the final ruler from the House of Plantagenet. He was married to Queen Margaret and their heir was Edward, Prince of Wales who was married to Lady Ann.
As the play opens, the sickly King Edward the 4th is currently on the throne. He and his younger brothers, George, the Duke of Clarence and Richard, the Duke of Gloucester represent the Yorks, issue of the Duchess of York.
King Edward the 4th is married to Queen Elizabeth. They have three offspring, Edward, Prince of Wales, Richard, Duke of York and Elizabeth (who is unseen). Queen Elizabeth also has a brother, Lord Rivers. King Edward the fourth’s younger brother Richard, the Duke of Gloucester later becomes Richard the third, which is the title of the play. He then marries Lady Ann to solidify his position.
The Yorks’ cousins are the Lancasters, represented by Henry, Duke of Richmond. He ultimately becomes King Henry the 7th.
The rest of the cast comprises noblemen, London town officials and murderers, whose loyalties are sought by the warring factions.

The Costumes
The characters are divided into two camps, posh and punk. The posh are bound by tradition and wear regal blues, greens, purples and reds. Whether or not they support Richard’s bid, they are entrenched in their ways. Although some begin to add punk elements as they begin to embrace change.
The punks are epitomized by Richard himself, with his black leather, studs, a mohawk and a cane that he wields as a weapon as often as he leans on it for his limp. His followers and other rebels dress similarly, with ripped off sleeves, studded neck and wrist cuffs, silver chains and skull motifs.
The twenty-one characters are portrayed by twelve talented actors. Many of them play multiple roles. Their personal bios are included in the paper program, as well as the online version available on our website. And now for the cast, in order of their first appearance.
Jacobite McFee, as the cruel and ambitious Richard the third, opens the show with a limping swagger. He wears a customized T shirt with his personal symbol of a boar on it and brandishes his omnipresent cane/sword. When he becomes king, he adds Richard’s crown and a black leather jacket with his boar on the back.
Grace Walls portrays his older brother George, the Duke of Clarence, wearing a conservative, red buttoned down shirt and tie, with hair pulled back. Later, as their mother, the Duchess of York, Grace dons a plum dress and rose patterned shawl, with loose, shoulder length tawny hair.
Barbara Schapiro depicts Brackenbury, the Tower of London’s Warden wearing a crimson military jacket with black long work buttonholes down the front. Queen Margaret has long flowing white hair with a neon pink streak, a long flowy violet skirt, studded black tank top and belt.
Matt Crawford as the recently released Lord William Hastings, affects a buttoned down red shirt, maroon tie and compulsively rubs each wrist with the opposite hand.
Lucy Arrigo portrays the widowed Lady Ann, initially wearing a blue, rose printed dress. As Lady Ann becomes swept into Richard’s orbit, she dons a black leather jacket. While depicting the second murderer, Lucy sports a black T shirt and studded head covering.
Nicki Ramshaw holds Queen Elizabeth with rigid comportment. She displays a fitted kelly green dress with an ornate golden rose brooch at the start of the show. In the second half, she wears a diaphanous navy floor length dress and the same gold brooch. Her dark hair is upswept.
Cameron Small as Lord Rivers, wears a maroon plaid shirt and maroon vest. Later, he menacingly portrays James Tyrell, a hired assassin, wearing a tan and black T shirt, leather vest and gold studded bracelet. Cameron also provided the sound design.
Daniel Kelley characterizes the Duke of Buckingham as one of Richard’s most loyal followers. He exhibits a sleeveless buttoned down shirt with a black and gray skull design.
Charles Hughs depicts Catesby, a thug who works for the current court. Catesby’s all black attire includes parachute pants, an open linen vest over a T shirt, a newsboy style cap and sunglasses. Charles also served as the fight director.
As King Edward the fourth, David Lee Vincent bears an amethyst vest over a wine colored buttoned down shirt and a crown. David portrays the Lord Mayor of London in a blue buttoned down shirt and vest. He also embodies Richard’s cousin and enemy, Henry, Duke of Richmond. Richmond wears a worn army fatigue jacket.
Nerissa Barrington-Haber as the first Murderer, displays a black studded head covering and black T shirt. Nerissa portrays Edward, the young Prince of Wales in a red polo shirt with a brooch. And Ratcliff, one of Richard’s followers and enforcers, wearing a black leather jacket with pink lining and ripped out sleeves over a skull shirt.
Graysen Mortimer interprets Lord Stanley, as the father to an unseen young son George, and a follower of Richard, until his allegiance is tested. Stanley exhibits a vest with black and white tie and a skull belt. As Richard, the young Duke of York who is imprisoned, Graysen wears a red polo shirt and brooch similar to his brother.

The Setting
Our history is set in 1970’s London, on a bare stage. Minimal set pieces such as a throne, table and chairs or cots are brought on and off as needed. Characters bring on their own small props and weapons. Samples of some of the props, costume pieces and weapons can be handled at the touch table, as you enter the park.
An eight foot, spray painted, canvas banner hangs on either side of the stage. The left side banner displays Richard the Third’s personal symbol of a white boar in profile. The boar appears to be sniffing the black outline of a four pointed crown. The top of the banner has the Latin phrase “LOYALTE ME LIE “ in upper case red letters. The English translation is “Loyalty binds me.” The initials MLW are tagged at the bottom.
On the right side of the stage, the banner displays a red rose and a white rose. Their green stems are linked together with interlocking circles. Down the left side of the banner, the Latin phrase “A VOUS ME LY” is painted in black upper case letters. The letters lie sideways and translate to “I am bound to you.”
And now, enjoy the show!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE
“Now is the winter of our discontent.” While this is the opening line Richard speaks, it was also what many in London thought during the 1970s when the punk movement began. My assistant director, Kyle Whitty, and I thought, “Why not mirror history with history?” We chose to set the play during the punk movement to show a timeline (both the events of the play and the movement lasted about 10 years), as well as a parallel between the two: that they both similarly defeated themselves. Richard begins the play seeking the throne, plotting to do whatever is necessary to get it, but when he gets it he has made many enemies and become paranoid, leading to his downfall. Meanwhile, the movement started in the 70s with an anti-establishment message but became mainstream and more of a fashion statement, leading to its downfall. Punk and Richard III are meant for one another, and we bring that to you today!
Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

SYNOPSIS
ACT I
Richard of Gloucester, crippled and bitter at the world, is determined to snatch the crown from his brother, King Edward IV, and seize power for himself. Richard schemes to have his elder brother Clarence imprisoned for treason in the Tower of London and later sends assassins to murder him. Richard woos Lady Anne, despite having murdered her husband and father-in-law, King Henry VI. Anne eventually succumbs to his flattery. Queen Elizabeth, Edward’s wife, is upset that Richard has been named Lord Protector of her young sons should her ailing husband die. She bickers with Richard, but they are interrupted by Margaret, former Queen of Henry VI. Her entire family has been slaughtered by Richard and the Yorks, and she curses them all.
King Edward dies, and to prevent other claims to the crown, Richard confines his young nephews, Princes Edward and York, to the Tower. Suspecting that Lord Hastings, the Lord Chamberlain, is disloyal, Richard arranges for his execution.

ACT II
In order to gain public acceptance, Richard spreads a rumor that the princes were bastards, not legitimate heirs. Richard is proclaimed King Richard III. He sends an assassin to murder the princes in the Tower. When Richard denies Buckingham an earldom, Buckingham leaves to join the forces opposing Richard. Buckingham is later captured and executed. Richard decides that to secure his position as king, he must marry his niece, Elizabeth of York (Elizabeth and Edward IV’s daughter). He has Anne murdered and informs Elizabeth of his plans to marry her daughter.
Meanwhile, the Earl of Richmond, heir to the Lancasters’ claim to the throne, has gathered an army in France to oppose Richard. The night before their battle, the ghosts of Richard’s victims curse Richard and bless Richmond. Richard is defeated on Bosworth Field and Richmond is proclaimed King Henry VII. He plans to end the War of the Roses (Lancaster vs. York) by marrying Elizabeth of York.

WHO’s WHO in the CAST and CREW
Lucy Arrigo (Lady Anne/Second Murderer) is thrilled to be performing Shakespeare again for the first time in 10 years! A former theatre kid, Lucy got away from theatre during college and is so happy to be back “home”. Thanks to the cast and crew for welcoming her, her family for their support (especially her mom and Dudley for helping with lines), Shakespeare for his brilliance, and to the historians behind the Gone Medieval podcast for making an episode on Anne Neville. Special thanks to the real-life Lady Anne.

Nerissa Barrington-Haber (First Murderer/Prince Edward/Ratcliffe) has been acting almost their whole life. Some of their previous Shakespeare credits include Puck in Midsummer Night’s Dream (Gazebo Players) and Fool in King Lear (Watertown Children’s Theatre). Other acting experiences includes Violet in Willy Wonka (Parish Players Dedham) and Janie Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life (Canton Community Theatre). When they aren’t on stage, they attend Emerson College, work at a mystery dinner theatre, and host Standing Room Only on the radio Saturday mornings.

Matt Crawford (Hastings) is pleased to make his Gazebo Players debut with this production.  He has appeared in several other Shakespeare plays previously, including The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, an online production of The Comedy of Errors, and a student film adaptation of Hamlet.  Beyond the Bard, he's appeared in a wide range of shows, from Christie to Sondheim, and original works as well.  He also has experience behind the scenes, in lighting, sound, and projections, and even co-wrote a play once!  Fun fact: this play will feature his second appearance as a Shakespearean ghost.

Charles Hughes (Catesby/Fight Director) is glad to return to the Gazebo Players this summer. He has recently performed as Alfred Dolittle in Pygmalion and the Wizard in the Wizard of OZ with YFE.  He has previously performed with Gazebo as Kent in King Lear and as Leontes, King of Sicilia in The Winter’s Tale.  He has performed with other theater companies through the area.

Daniel Kelley (Buckingham) joins the cast in his first role with the Gazebo Players! His previous roles include a demon named Harrison, Mortimer Brewster, Dracula as a Silicon Valley CEO, a guy who likes stealing household appliances, and even the super intelligent monster hunter Clark Lawrence. While pursuing his undergrad at UVM, Daniel acted, directed, and wrote for multiple different shows for the UVM UPlayers. Daniel has been acting and making art for a long time. When he’s not acting on stage, he’s probably working on a film for his YouTube channel. Daniel also loves playing the piano and sometimes composes his own music.

Jacobite McFee (Richard III) is thrilled to return to Gazebo Players to play Richard III, after joining them as King Lear in King Lear in 2023.  Recent roles are Macbeth in Macbeth (TPAC, 2024);  Oberon in Midsummer Night’s Dream (Nemasket Pr., 2023), Phillip in Relatively Speaking (MMAS, 2024) ; Father Donald in Sticks & Bones (BCA, 2023).  Jacobite has also appeared in over 60 films, several taking top prizes at international festivals. Deep gratitude to his wife and best friend of 32 years and three amazing kids for their patience and love.
